What Is Play-Based Learning in Childcare?

Play-based learning is a proven educational philosophy that sees play as a child’s most natural and effective way to learn. Instead of formal instruction, children explore, create, and experiment guided by educators who extend their curiosity through meaningful experiences.

At Daystars Early Learning, play is a purposeful experience. Every activity, from painting to problem-solving, is designed to help children develop critical thinking, independence, and emotional resilience, all while having fun.

Why Play Builds the Strongest Foundations for Learning

Play is where imagination meets understanding. It helps children develop essential life skills long before they enter school:

    • Cognitive development: Thinking, reasoning, and understanding cause and effect.
    • Social and emotional growth: Learning to share, empathise, and collaborate.
    • Physical coordination: Building fine and gross motor skills through active movement.

At Daystars, we see every play moment as an opportunity to teach — not through pressure, but through genuine curiosity and joy.

How Daystars Educators Inspire Discovery Through Play

Our experienced educators are the heart of our play-based learning approach. At Daystars Killara and Daystars Bardwell Valley, they observe each child’s interests and gently guide them towards deeper exploration.

Whether it’s experimenting with textures in the art area, building bridges in the construction zone, or exploring the natural world outdoors, educators ask open-ended questions that spark critical thinking.

This balance between freedom and guidance ensures each child learns at their own pace — developing not just skills, but confidence and a lifelong love for discovery.

Inside Our Centres: A Day of Learning at Killara and Bardwell Valley

Every corner of our centres is designed to support play-based learning in safe, engaging, and inspiring spaces.

Why Play Matters in Early Childhood

For young children, play is more than just fun — it is the foundation for learning. Research consistently shows that play-based learning supports brain development, confidence, and social skills. Parents in our community value this approach because it prepares children for school and life in a natural, engaging way.

    Key Benefits of Play-Based Learning

    Cognitive Development

Through puzzles, building blocks, and imaginative play, children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They begin to understand concepts such as numbers, patterns, and sequences long before formal schooling.

    Social and Emotional Growth

Play encourages teamwork, negotiation, and empathy. Children learn how to share, take turns, and manage emotions, which builds resilience and healthy relationships.

    Language and Communication Skills

Storytelling, role play, and conversations during play help children build strong vocabulary and communication skills. These early experiences support literacy development and school readiness.

    Creativity and Problem-Solving

When children build, design, or invent during play, they learn to experiment, test ideas, and think creatively. These skills are essential for adaptability in school and beyond.

    Physical Development

Outdoor play, movement activities, and fine motor tasks strengthen both gross motor and fine motor skills, helping children grow in confidence and independence.

How Daystars Puts Play Into Practice

At Daystars, play-based learning is at the heart of our curriculum. Educators design experiences that spark curiosity and encourage discovery. From hands-on science experiments to outdoor exploration, children learn through meaningful play every day.

What Parents Value About Play-Based Learning at Daystars

Families consistently highlight the balance between structured learning outcomes and the joy of exploration. Parents appreciate that children develop school readiness skills without pressure, while also enjoying their childhood.

The babies’ room is now more fresher and brighter looking with new flooring and outdoor activity stations. The Discoverers are able to explore freely, from one to the other, based upon their individual interests.

One of the favourite activities is the pipe and ball system on the playground wall. Children can feed balls through the pipe openings, on different levels, to catch, chase or watch them roll out onto the playground.

Positioned off the sandpit area, is the wooden kitchen where babies can incorporate sand and water play, while cooking up a storm using pots, pans and sandpit toys.

Another new setting is the archway path, which leads to the blackboard wall. Here children can create their masterpieces in a fun and natural environment.
